On July 6, 2026, the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) organized an online meeting dedicated to the results of the provincial elections held in Kanaky-New Caledonia, APA reports.
Representatives from Kanaky-New Caledonia, Réunion, Mayotte, the Union of the Comoros, and French Guiana, all of which suffer from French colonialism, took part in the meeting.
During the discussions, Jean-Baptiste Dialle, a representative of the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front, which is fighting for the independence of Kanaky-New Caledonia, said that the elections were a success for supporters of independence.
However, representatives of the Kanak people expressed regret that, as a result of the French government's policy, part of the population has lost confidence in the electoral process, and hopes that the path to independence could be achieved solely through voting have weakened. For this reason, the local community did not actively participate in the elections.
According to Orlane Taristas, a representative of the "Ka Ubuntu" party, which is fighting for the independence of Réunion, the success achieved by supporters of independence in Kanaky-New Caledonia is of particular importance against the backdrop of serious concerns created by official Paris regarding the transparency of the electoral process.
Former political prisoner and activist fighting for the independence of Kanaky-New Caledonia, Dimitri Qenegei, described the elections as successful and assessed them as a step toward the next stage of the struggle for freedom.
During the meeting, a symbolic flashmob was held at the initiative of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) in support of the Kanak people and the representatives who won the June 28 provincial elections. Participants displayed slogans such as "Freedom for Kanaky," "Congratulations," and other messages of support.
At the end of the meeting, the participants expressed their gratitude to the Baku Initiative Group for keeping the struggle of peoples suffering from French colonialism on the international agenda, as well as for the support and messages of solidarity extended to them.
Reyunyonun müstəqilliyi uğrunda mübarizə aparan “Ka Ubuntu” partiyasının nümayəndəsi Orlane Taristasın sözlərinə görə, Kanaki-Yeni Kaledoniyada müstəqillik tərəfdarlarının əldə etdiyi uğur rəsmi Parisin seçki prosesinin şəffaflığına dair yaratdığı ciddi narahatlıqlar fonunda xüsusi əhəmiyyət kəsb edir.
