The Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker Al Rekayyat came under attack near the coast of Oman after exiting the Strait of Hormuz, Bloomberg reports.

The incident occurred on July 7 approximately 15 kilometers east of Oman's Lima region. It is reported that the tanker, owned by Qatar's state shipping company Nakilat, was struck by a drone or missile, causing a fire to break out on board.

Following the incident, markets reacted immediately. At the start of the Asian trading session, natural gas prices in Europe rose by as much as 4.5%. Brent crude oil futures also increased.

It is noted that oil prices had fallen sharply in recent days due to expectations that more vessels would be able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the latest attack has created new concerns in the markets.

In addition, another LNG tanker, Al Areesh, which had loaded cargo in Qatar and was leaving the Persian Gulf, changed course and turned back following the attack. Before that, the vessel had been heading toward Pakistan's Port Qasim.
