“The Azerbaijani people will never forget the Khojaly tragedy,” MP Jeyhun Mammadov said at today’s session of the Milli Majlis, APA reports.
The MP said that the Khojaly tragedy stands out among many genocides in the world for its cruelty and brutality: “The Azerbaijani people proved on the battlefield that they would not reconcile with these crimes or with the occupation of their lands, and wrote a glorious chapter in history. Today, under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan is successfully advancing the peace-building process. At the same time, consistent steps are being taken to ensure that the tragedies inflicted on our people are not forgotten. The construction of memorial complexes in various regions of Azerbaijan, especially in the territories liberated from occupation, once again confirms this. Undoubtedly, all political and military leaders of Armenia who were in power during the war bear responsibility for the crimes committed. Our consolation today is that some of those who perpetrated these crimes have already been punished, and others will also face justice.”
MP Vugar Bayramov noted that the Azerbaijani people and state have never forgotten and will never forget the Khojaly tragedy: “Today, a new chapter is opening in the Khojaly district. Under the leadership of the President of Azerbaijan, as in all settlements liberated from occupation, Khojaly is being rebuilt and developed. More than 4,000 residents have already settled in the Khojaly district, including the city of Khojaly and seven villages.”
MP Sahib Aliyev emphasized that the participation of the 366th regiment in the perpetration of the Khojaly genocide is a confirmed fact:
“If those who call themselves the ‘collective West’ had demonstrated principled support for justice and international law when the Khojaly genocide occurred, would the Ukrainian people be facing today’s reality? Could those who followed the path of the 366th regiment have carried out a massacre in Bucha similar to Khojaly? Of course not! I hope that all those still alive who committed the Khojaly genocide will one day be arrested and brought to Baku, like the representatives of the ‘miatsum’ regime in Karabakh against whom verdicts have already been issued. Armenia itself, in fact, should also be interested in this.”
MP Bakhtiyar Aliyev pointed out that for centuries Azerbaijanis were expelled from their ancestral lands, subjected to ethnic cleansing, and at the same time faced genocide in different periods: “In the autumn of 1987 — in November and December — the mass expulsion of Azerbaijanis from the Gafan district began. On those snowy days, in the cold, children and the elderly crossed the mountains barefoot, seeking refuge in Shusha and Khojaly, thereby seemingly signaling the beginning of a new genocide.”
Bakhtiyar Aliyev noted that after National Leader Heydar Aliyev returned to political power at the persistent demand of the people, a legal and political assessment was given to the Khojaly genocide: “Under the command of the Victorious Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, the victorious Azerbaijani Army liberated our lands from Armenia’s occupation, fighting bravely on the battlefield and avenging all our martyrs, including the citizens who were victims of the Khojaly genocide. Our lands were freed from the enemy, and Azerbaijan restored its sovereignty and territorial integrity. This was the greatest tribute to the souls of our martyrs.”
