Advisory Board under the Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Associations holds meeting

Baku–APA. Advisory Board under the Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Associations held a meeting on Wednesday. Chairman of the Advisory Board Hidayat Orujov opened the meeting with the sorrowful words about the death of the Moscow and All-Russia Patriarch Alexiy II and said this was a painful loss for not only Russia and the Orthodox Church, but also for Azerbaijan. The Patriarch’s memory was honored with a minute of silence.

Then Hidayat Orujov informed about the draft amendments and annexes to the Azerbaijan Constitution and said if the annexes were adopted, it would be the next positive step toward the protection of freedom of faith of the citizens. Members of the Board also positively appreciated the amendments and emphasized that the document would play important role in the regulation of activities of the religious organizations in the country. The Board discussed the agenda issues, including the religious situation, extension of religious education, religious ceremonies in January, working plan for 2009 and other current issues.

The Board underlined the stable religious situation in the country and spoke about the importance of the joint activity against the untraditional radical and extremist sections and emphasized the necessity of the strengthening of struggle in this field. The speakers expressed regret that earlier the State Committee did not provide sustainable and resolute activity to prevent negative cases in the religious situation, like untraditional radical, extremist sections, missionary activities in Azerbaijan. The Advisory Board approved its working plan for 2009.
