US President Donald Trump has promised to provide $5,000 payments to American adults if Republicans retain control of Congress following the November 3 midterm elections.
The proposed payments, which Trump has described as the "Trump dividend," became a central element of his campaign message in the final weeks before the vote, Reuters reports.
Trump first introduced the proposal in September and has repeatedly promoted it at campaign rallies, presenting the payments as a financial benefit for American citizens if Republicans maintain their congressional majority.
According to estimates, the United States has approximately 240 million adult citizens, meaning the proposed payments would cost the federal government at least $1.2 trillion.
However, implementing the initiative would require congressional approval, creating significant legislative and financial challenges.
Democrats have criticized the proposal, arguing that there is no realistic path to implementing the payments.
Some Republican lawmakers have also expressed concerns about the economic consequences of distributing such a large amount of money.
They warned that injecting more than $1 trillion into the economy could accelerate inflation at a time when American households are already struggling with rising living costs.
The proposal remains a campaign pledge rather than an approved government program, and no payments have been authorized.
The initiative has attracted attention as control of the House of Representatives and Senate is being decided in the November 3 midterm elections.
