“Many people at Nuray Abilova’s age cannot compete at a professional level,” said Turkish weightlifter Gamze Altun to Apasport.az correspondent dispatched to the VI Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
Gamze Altun spoke about her competition and championship with 15-year-old Azerbaijani weightlifter Nuray Abilova:
“I am really happy. I participated in the Islamic Solidarity Games for the first time and won 3 gold medals. I am very happy to compete with my Azerbaijani rival. We both won medals. Although Nuray is young, she is an athlete with great promise for the future. Many people at her age cannot compete at a professional level. I am sure that she will achieve great success in the future.”
The Turkish champion recalled that they dedicated the championship they won in Armenia to Azerbaijan:
"My teammate and I won a medal at the European Championship held in Armenia and dedicated that medal to Azerbaijan. Later, Mr. President Ilham Aliyev invited us to Azerbaijan. The day before our competition, the Azerbaijani flag was burned, and therefore your national team did not participate in the competition. That is why we decided to make such a gesture."
It should be noted that Gamze Altun won 3 gold medals in the 48 kg weight category in Islamic Solidarity Games. Our representative Nuray Abilova finished the competition with 3 bronze medals.
