The title of World Sports Capital has been officially handed over from Monaco to Baku, APA reports.
Thus, the capital of Azerbaijan has been declared the World Sports Capital for 2026. The city of Baku has gained a remarkable status for the international sports community and has been awarded the title of “World Sports Capital” for 2026.
On this occasion, a ceremonial signing of the World Sports Capitals commemorative plaque was held with the participation of state officials and representatives of the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES).
The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Farid Gayibov, the Head of Baku City Executive Power, Eldar Azizov, ACES President Gian Francesco Lupattelli, ACES Secretary General Hugo Alonso Castanon, as well as former Minister of Education, Youth and Sports of the Principality of Monaco, Isabelle Claude Aline Bonnal.
Note that ACES is a non-profit association based in Brussels, which annually awards cities from different continents with the title of “Sports Capital” and other awards in the field of sports. These titles and awards are granted based on ethical principles and serve the social integration of society, psycho-physical well-being, and the improvement of quality of life. ACES is also an official partner of the European Commission’s European Week of Sport and a collaborating organization of UNESCO.
