One of the main tasks currently facing our government is the reconstruction of Karabakh and East Zangezur, which had been under Armenia’s occupation for 30 years and were completely destroyed, President Ilham Aliyev said during his speech at the opening ceremony of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, APA reports.
“International observers and guests compared the city of Aghdam to Hiroshima, calling it the ‘Hiroshima of the Caucasus,’ because the city virtually did not exist.
The cities had been completely razed to the ground and, unlike Hiroshima, this did not happen in a single day as a result of an atomic bomb. This destruction was carried out during the 30 years of occupation. Historical buildings, public facilities and residential houses were demolished and completely destroyed. Currently, the ‘Great Return’ program is being implemented and master plans for cities and villages are being prepared. Of course, I do not want to list too many figures, but I will mention only two indicators. Over the past five years, the total length of the tunnels we have built has already reached 70 kilometers. The construction of five more tunnels is ongoing. Out of 500 bridges, 435 have already been built. Along with all this, power plants, water supply systems, reservoirs, residential buildings, schools, hospitals, three international airports and railways have been constructed. All this work has been carried out in just five years. This demonstrates the attitude of the true owners of the land toward their native homeland,” the head of state noted.
