“We had to carry out large-scale environmental work in Baku,” President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said during his speech at the opening ceremony of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), APA reports.
“Regarding Baku, I would also like to mention a few points. We had to carry out large-scale environmental work here. Baku is the city where oil was first produced in the world. This happened in 1846. However, over the past 180 years, almost no attention was paid to environmental protection. As a result, Baku had become seriously polluted. If I mention areas such as Baku’s ‘Black City,’ Bibiheybat and other industrial zones, this may not mean much to foreign guests. But if you had the opportunity to visit these places and look at videos or photos showing how they looked 20 years ago, you would clearly see what work has been done today to create an environmentally clean environment in Baku. In the area once called ‘Black City’ due to being heavily polluted, today ‘White City,’ which is an example of urban planning, has been established. This is a separate city within the city.
Another example of urban planning is the resort city of Sea Breeze Resort. I especially recommend visiting it to guests who enjoy swimming in cold water. I know there are some such people in this hall. By going there, you can see another example of modern urban planning. Over the past 20 years, we have created 100 parks, gardens and recreational areas in Baku, while 19 parks have been completely reconstructed. Environmentally clean cities, rapid access to public transport, micromobility infrastructure, the metro system and modern electric buses — all of this is being implemented within the framework of a unified concept for the capital. This is not limited only to the capital. As I mentioned, urban planning is developing rapidly in many regions of Azerbaijan,” the head of state noted.
