Azerbaijani Press Council to monitor media in connection with violation of ethic norms on the eve of presidential elections

The ethic norms on presidential elections to be held in Azerbaijan in 2008 will not be violated in media this year, as it was observed in previous years. The media situation was bad during 2003 presidential elections. Several media outlets had severe approach to one another,” chief of Press Council of Azerbaijan Aflatun Amashov told APA.
Council chief said that media has been developing within past years.
Mr. Amashov mentioned that nearly 30 new media outlets were released on the eve of 2005 parliamentary elections.
“The newspapers were suspended gradually after elections ended,” he said.
Amashov also said that Press Council intends to take special measures for eliminating tension felt in media in the year of election. He said that the organization he chairs will carry out monitoring due to presidential elections which will be held in Azerbaijan this year.
“We will debate complaints on elections and then make decision,” he said.
Council chief saying that Press Council receives over 800 complaints every year stressed that the complaints were divided into groups due to their character.
“Nearly 500 of these appeals were linked with “racketeering journalists”. We received nearly 350 complaints on violation of norms of behavior of journalists,” he said. /APA/
