MFA: Azerbaijan attaches great importance to cooperation with UN human rights treaty bodies

Azerbaijan’s delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Samir Sharifov participated in the 79th session of the UN Committee against Torture in Geneva, on April 23-24, APA reports citing Press Service of MFA.

The fifth periodic report of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was presented at the session.

Addressing the participants, Deputy FM Samir Sharifov emphasized that Azerbaijan attaches great importance to cooperation with the relevant UN Human Rights Treaty Bodies. He highlighted the judicial reforms carried out in Azerbaijan recently, as well as progressive steps in the implementation of the obligations arising from the Convention.

The deputy minister stated that for the first time since the liberation of its lands from the 30-year long Armenian occupation, Azerbaijan will fulfil its obligations arising from the international agreements across the country, and fully ensure the rule of law.

Samir Sharifov also highlighted the measures undertaken by the Azerbaijani government to deepen the legislative reforms, the introduction of new information technologies, as well as numerous training, seminars and educational programmes on human rights and fundamental rights organized for law enforcement officers in Azerbaijan and abroad.

The members of the Committee were also informed of the measures to ensure the independence of the judicial system, modernize the justice system, improve the penitentiary infrastructure and provide prisoners with quality medical services, combating human trafficking and domestic violence, and ensuring human rights, including the elimination of all forms of violence against children.
