Azerbaijan has great potential to become a regional manufacturing and logistics hub, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Dmitro Shlapachenko told APA.
He said that Azerbaijan cannot be considered separately from global trends and that developments taking place around the world also affect the country’s future economic development.
Shlapachenko noted that, alongside diversifying its economy beyond the oil and gas sector, Azerbaijan can strengthen its position in regional and global value chains by leveraging its strategic geographical location and transport connectivity.
“Azerbaijan has a strategic location and important connectivity opportunities. By leveraging innovation, private sector development and export competitiveness, the country can move up regional and global value chains,” the UN official said.
He emphasized that the Baku port and railway infrastructure complement Azerbaijan’s existing opportunities to become a regional manufacturing and logistics hub.
Shlapachenko also noted the importance of increasing investment in human capital and innovation in Azerbaijan.
In his view, artificial intelligence, automation and digital technologies are transforming the manufacturing sector, and this process requires the development of a workforce with new skills.
The UN Resident Coordinator said that Azerbaijan’s alignment with international standards and regulatory norms is also important in terms of expanding the country’s export opportunities and its integration into global value chains.
