Khojaly Massacre and Its Severe Consequences
In commemoration of the 33rd anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan has sent appeals to the heads of working groups on inter-parliamentary relations with foreign countries, the chairs of international parliamentary committees, and international parliamentary organizations, the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis told APA.
The appeals highlight that on the night of February 25-26, 1992, the armed forces of Armenia attacked the city of Khojaly, devastating it overnight. Due to their ethnic identity, 613 civilians, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly individuals, were brutally murdered. Eight families were completely wiped out, 25 children lost both parents, and 130 children lost one parent. The victims suffered unprecedented cruelty. Additionally, 1,275 residents of Khojaly were taken hostage, with the fate of 150 people, including 68 women and 26 children, still unknown.
Organizers and Perpetrators of the Khojaly Genocide
Although the organizers of this act of genocide were the political and state leadership of the Republic of Armenia, the direct perpetrators were members of the Armenian armed forces, Armenian terrorist groups, and soldiers of the former Soviet Army's 366th Motorized Rifle regiment stationed in Khankandi.
Reconstruction Work in Liberated Territories
The appeals emphasize that after ending 30 years of occupation and restoring its territorial integrity and sovereignty, Azerbaijan is now conducting large-scale restoration and reconstruction work in all liberated territories, including Khojaly. Just like the residents of other regions, the people of Khojaly, returning to their native lands, will live in peace and security in their homes.
The Necessity of Restoring Justice
However, the victims of the Khojaly genocide are still waiting for justice to be restored. Unfortunately, Armenia refuses to bring the perpetrators of this massacre and numerous other war crimes to justice. Armenia's inaction and failure to address its violations of the law blatantly contravene international law, reinforce impunity, and pose a serious threat to long-awaited peace and stability in the region.
Khojaly Genocide – A Crime Against Humanity
The appeals stress that the Khojaly genocide is not only a crime against the Azerbaijani people but also a crime against all humanity. The resolute condemnation of this genocide by the civilized world can help prevent the occurrence of such crimes in the future.
