“PACE explored the situation on democracy in Azerbaijan and made some demands on the release of politicians and journalists. I was recently informed of the release of 80 prisoners on a presidential pardon decree. However, I can’t say this decree covers to all prisoners it was supposed to,†he added.
He expressed hope for further steps to release prisoners and for democratic elections in the country.
“I hope that democracy will be fully ensured and upcoming elections will be compliant with the principles of the Council of Europe. During my visit, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev personally promised that the presidential elections will be democratic,†he added.
