Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, the all-time leading goalscorer for his national team and a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, played his final World Cup match, APA reports.
Portugal lost 1-0 to Spain in the Round of 16.
Ronaldo has played 27 games at the World Cup, the second-highest total in the tournament's history, behind only Argentine forward Lionel Messi (30). Ronaldo has scored 11 goals, only one of which came in the playoffs – in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 against Croatia (2-1).
On the eve of the match against Spain, Ronaldo stated that this World Cup was the last of his career. His best result was fourth place at the 2006 tournament. Prior to this, Ronaldo's sister stated that the player would retire from the national team after the World Cup, but the player later denied this. According to him, no decision has yet been made about continuing his career with the national team.
