The Mexican national football team defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup. The match took place at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City in front of 80,824 spectators, APA reports.

Julian Quiñones scored the tournament's first goal in the 9th minute. Raúl Jiménez added another in the 67th minute. In the second half, the referee issued three red cards: South Africa's Sphiphelo Sithole was sent off in the 49th minute for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, and in the 84th minute, the African team was reduced to nine men when Themba Zwane was shown a red card for foul play. In stoppage time, Lokomotiv Moscow defender César Montes, who had come onto the field wearing the captain's armband, ended the game early.
