Chelsea wins UEFA Champions League final in shootout

Chelsea won the penalty shootout by a score of 4-3.

Bayern dominated most of the final, but was held goalless until the 83rd minute of the match, which was held at their home stadium, Allianz Arena, in Munich on Saturday.

Thomas Mueller opened the scoring when he shocked Chelsea keeper Petr Cech with a stunning header.

Mueller drifted in to meet a long cross by Toni Kroos at the far post, and his header bounced down and then into the goal off the underside of the crossbar.

However, Didier Drogba leveled the match with a dramatic header two minutes before the final whistle and sent the game to extra time.

Drogba, in what may have been his last game for Chelsea, took Juan Mata’s corner cross and powered a header high into the net, leaving no chance for Bayern goalie Manuel Neuer.

In the early minutes of the first period of extra time, the Bavarians had the best opportunity to score a second goal on a penalty kick, but Arien Robben missed the chance.

In the shootout, Drogba buried the winning penalty as he sent Neuer the wrong way in front of massed Bayern fans, moments after Bastian Schweinsteiger’s last kick for Bayern hit the post.

Chelsea will be taking home its first Champions League title, four years after losing in a shootout to Manchester United in the Champions League final.
