Tajikistan applies for non-permanent seat on UN Security Council for 2028-2029

Tajikistan has proposed its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2028-2029, announced Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin, speaking at the general policy debate during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, APA reports.

"Strengthening the UN requires greater responsibility. Tajikistan is ready to do this. And for the first time in its history, Tajikistan is running for a seat on the Security Council for the 2028-2029 term," he said.

According to the Foreign Minister, an effective UN is essential for international cooperation, which is why Tajikistan supports the ongoing UN-80 reform process.

"Reform is not an end in itself. Reform should make the UN more effective, flexible, coherent, and better able to fulfill its mandates. <...> Strengthening the UN requires member states willing to assume even greater responsibility," he emphasized.

Mukhriddin noted that tensions are currently rising in the world. "Conflicts are multiplying, trust is eroding, and uncertainty is becoming part of our daily reality. <...> Peace remains our most important responsibility, but peace cannot be taken for granted. It must be carefully built and steadfastly defended," he reminded.

The minister also highlighted a number of Tajikistan's international initiatives, including the declaration of 2027-2036 as the International Decade for the Strengthening of Peace for Future Generations, the Dushanbe Water Process, and artificial intelligence.
