Russia has become a long-term threat to NATO, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in an interview with Bloomberg TV.
Rutte noted that defense spending in Europe was significantly reduced following the fall of the Berlin Wall.
“After the fall of the Berlin Wall, much of the defense spending was cut. It was believed that we were living in a world where there would never be war again. But then Putin came to power, became increasingly radical and turned into a long-term threat to NATO,” he said.
The Secretary General said that for this reason, NATO members have increased military spending and strengthened their military capabilities.
