Barcelona lifts European Super Cup

Baku-APA. European Champion Barcelona has defeated Europa League champion FC Porto 2-0 to lift the European Super Cup, APA reports quoting Press TV.

Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas scored to give Barca its fourth European Super Cup trophy in Monaco on Friday, AP reported.

Messi, who was honored as the Best Player in Europe on Thursday, intercepted an awful back-pass by Porto’s Colombian midfielder Freddy Guarin and slotted the ball in the 39th minute of the match.

Two minutes to the final whistle, substitute Fabregas fired home on a pass from Messi.

Porto finished the match with nine men as defender Rolando received a second yellow card for tripping Messi in the 86th minute, and his teammate Guarin got a straight red card four minutes later for lunging at Javier Mascherano.

The victory made Pep Guardiola the most decorated coach in Barcelona’s history with 12 trophies in his fourth season.

The UEFA Super Cup or European Super Cup is an annual football game between the reigning champions of the two cup competitions organized by UEFA, namely the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
