Groundbreaking ceremony for 65 000-seat Olympic Stadium held in Azerbaijan’s capital – <font color=red>UPDATED </font>

Baku – APA. Groundbreaking ceremony for Baku Olympic Stadium was held on June 6. APA reports that Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, UEFA President Michel Platini, as well as famous representatives of football community, heads of federations, football veterans and other guests attended the ceremony.

President Ilham Aliyev was told that 65 000-seat Baku Olympic Stadium will be distinguished by its modern style of construction and special beauty. Multi-function platforms, race track and other infrastructure will be built here.

120,830 sq m stadium will be built in line with the International Building Code (IBC), UEFA and FIFA standards and Azerbaijan’s building norms. The initial activities concerning the designing of the stadium started in 2008.

Film about the history of the world and Azerbaijani football was screened at the ceremony.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, UEFA President Michel Platini and FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter made speeches at the ceremony.

Following this, groundbreaking ceremony was held.

The head of state put the time capsule into the symbolic ball. President’s son Heydar Aliyev kicked the ball into the symbolic goal.

President Ilham Aliyev, FIFA and UEFA presidents signed the memory ball.

The guests attending the ceremony expressed their gratitude to President for the attention and care for the development of sport in Azerbaijan.

The stadium will be built in Boyuk Shor settlement, near Azizbeyov metro station.
