Baku-APA. Liverpool have turned down Chelsea’s request for striker Fernando Torres as the January transfer window is to close on Monday, APA reports quoting Xinhua News Agency.

"Chelsea have made an offer for Fernando, which has been rejected," said the English Premier League side late Thursday. "The player is not for sale."

The team has recovered from relegation threat, lifting the ranking to seventh with recent wins since Kenny Dalglish returned to the manager’s job at the start of the month.

Chelsea, however, are in need of a new forward to help them defend the Premiership title as they slipped from top to the fourth in the standings, 10 points behind leader Manchester United.

The bid for Torres was suspected by local media to be at 35 million pounds (about 56 million U.S. dollars), although he has only found the net nine times for Liverpool since returning from South Africa.

The World Cup-winning Spain striker joined Liverpool for a club-record 20.3 million pounds (then about 40.6 million U.S. dollars) in 2007 from Atletico Madrid.
