The European Union is approaching a new era of freedom from energy dependence on Russia, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, APA-Economics reports, citing TASS.
Von der Leyen said the EU is entering a period in which reliance on Russian energy is coming to an end and stressed that Europe’s path toward independence must be irreversible.
She noted that gas imports from Russia to the EU — including both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and pipeline gas — have dropped from 45% before the war between Russia and Ukraine to 13% today. Oil imports from Russia have also declined sharply, falling from 26% to just 2%.
