Container transportation along the western branch of the North–South transport corridor, which covers Russia, Azerbaijan, and Iran, has increased 1.6 times this year, Oleg Belozyorov, Director General and Chairman of the Management Board of “Russian Railways” (RZD) JSC, told journalists within the framework of the meeting of the Council for Railway Transport of CIS countries held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.

According to him, 6,558 containers have currently been transported along the mentioned route. Transportation along the eastern branch of the North–South corridor has also doubled, but for now the figures are lower.

Belozyorov stated that there is great potential for the corridor and that integration of all technological elements is important. This includes infrastructure, management systems, as well as modernization of information and documentation processes.

He noted that bilateral agreements enabling digital data transfer between Russia and Azerbaijan have already been signed, and this will reduce the documentation burden and increase processing speed.

“We are currently working on the signing of a trilateral agreement between Russia, Azerbaijan, and Iran on the North–South International Transport Corridor,” Belozyorov added.
