The largest Battery Energy Storage Centers in the CIS region will be put into operation in Azerbaijan’s Absheron and Agdash districts in the coming months, AzerEnergy told APA-Economics.

Large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are being rapidly developed to support the dynamic growth of renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan. These facilities—set to be the largest of their kind in the CIS in terms of capacity and power—are being constructed at the 500 kV Absheron substation near the capital and the 220 kV Agdash substation in the central part of the country.

The centers will have a total capacity of 250 megawatts and an energy storage capacity of 500 megawatt-hours. The first batch of battery storage systems has already arrived in Azerbaijan. Manufactured to order at China’s Great Power plant, the equipment was shipped by sea through multiple international routes before reaching Turkey’s Gemlik Port and then transported overland via Turkey and Georgia to Azerbaijan. Each unit weighs 36 tons and was delivered under police escort. So far, 15% of the systems have been delivered, with the remaining 85% expected to arrive and be installed by April.

AzerEnergy noted that the battery storage centers are strategically important for enhancing grid stability, maintaining frequency balance, compensating for fluctuations in renewable energy generation, covering peak demand, smoothing load curves during periods of reduced solar output, and restoring the power system from scratch in emergency situations. The systems are expected to strengthen Azerbaijan’s energy independence and ensure reliable operation of the national grid both independently and in parallel with neighboring countries.
