BP outlines efforts to stabilize production at ACG field

In the last 5–7 years, production at the "Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli" (ACG) oil and gas fields has entered a phase of sharp decline, BP's Area Development Manager for the "Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli" oil and gas field block, Afghan Huseynov, said during his speech at the SPE Caspian Technical Conference, APA-Economics reports.

"Therefore, I would like to highlight several investment directions that help change the situation. One of the main directions is a large-scale seismic program in the Caspian. In terms of investment — let's not talk about specific figures — this is probably the largest project of its kind in the industry. We decided to start this program two years ago. It is a five-year project aimed at better understanding the structure of the layers and improving static and dynamic modeling. Especially for the second reservoirs, which will play a key role in the future. There is still great potential in the field — we have extracted about half of the recoverable reserves, and there is still a lot of work ahead," Afghan Huseynov noted.

According to him, more than 20 new injector wells have been drilled in ACG over the past three years.

“This step helped us restore pressure, rebalance operations, and ensure the stability of production wells. Another direction of our efforts to stabilize output at ACG is the introduction of new technologies. We have successfully implemented horizontal drilling — something that may not seem unusual for onshore projects, but under the conditions of the South Caspian basin, it represents major progress. This region is one of the most challenging in BP’s portfolio in terms of reservoir pressures and fracture gradients. Drilling here is extremely difficult,” the BP representative added.

According to Afgan Huseynov, all these initiatives have made it possible to keep the production decline at ACG at a manageable pace — around 3% per year — and have prevented the sharp drops observed in previous years.
