Functionaries of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) assessed these meetings as attempts to interfere in Azerbaijan’s internal affairs. The diplomatic missions of the western states characterize the contact with the opposition as a meeting “not contradicting the diplomatic mandate”.

OSCE Office in Baku told APA that the meeting took place on April 8 at the invitation of the Public Chamber. The western diplomats accepted the invitation and decided to visit the Public Chamber together. As regards the aim of the meeting, the main intention was to listen to the positions of the political parties concerning the socio-political situation in the country. OSCE Office did not comment on the accusations that the western diplomats interfered in Azerbaijan’s internal affairs.

Representative of the U.S. embassy also attended the meeting with the Public Chamber. The U.S. embassy told APA that the meeting had not been initiated by the embassy. The aim of the meeting was to familiarize with the views of the Public Chamber members on the socio-political situation in the country. U.S. diplomatic mission did not want to comment on the statements of the YAP officials.

The UK embassy in Azerbaijan did not comment on the meeting.
