New, larger-capacity vessels are expected to enter service in the Caspian Sea to expand container transportation along the Middle Corridor, Elmir Poladov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan Freight Forwarders Association, stated at the Azerbaijan–European Union Business Forum, APA-Economics reports.
According to him, in addition to ferries and Ro-Ro vessels, small container ships are currently operating in the Caspian Sea.
Poladov noted that new, larger-capacity container ships are under construction and are expected to enter service in 2027.
He stated that other infrastructure projects are also being implemented along the Middle Corridor. The capacity of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway line has been increased to 5 million tons, while the expansion of the Alat Port is continuing.
In addition, work is underway to establish a national single-window system in Azerbaijan to simplify freight transportation procedures.
The association official emphasized that the main objective is to integrate these developments into a unified system to ensure uninterrupted and predictable transportation for cargo owners along the Middle Corridor.
