Azerbaijan could gain a number of advantages by joining the Common Transit Convention, WTO expert Marius Bordalba said at the Azerbaijan–European Union Business Forum, APA reports.
He stated that a number of activities are being carried out in the areas of trade policy, quality infrastructure, and digital transformation to create a healthy business environment and support economic development in Azerbaijan.
According to the expert, as part of the project, support is being provided to the Ministry of Economy in assessing the regulatory framework for e-commerce. The aim of this process is to identify gaps in existing legislation and assess the need to develop new legal regulations.
Marius Bordalba noted that representatives of government agencies, the private sector, and civil society, including online trading platforms, banks, payment organizations, logistics operators, and consumer organizations, are involved in the assessments conducted in the field of e-commerce.
He also stated that support is being provided to the State Customs Committee in the process of joining the Common Transit Convention.
According to the expert, Azerbaijan's accession to the Convention will enable the country's companies to carry out transportation from Baku to any destination within the Common Transit Area using a single declaration, a single guarantee, and a single procedure. Currently, the Common Transit Area covers 41 countries.
He emphasized that accession to the Convention will facilitate faster border crossings, the digitalization of customs procedures, the reduction of guarantee costs, and the application of uniform rules across participating countries. At the same time, legal certainty will be ensured regarding liability, inquiries, and claims.
