Digitalization and coordination are important for increasing the efficiency of the Middle Corridor, Jasurbek Choriev, Secretary General of the Permanent Secretariat of the TRACECA Intergovernmental Commission, said during a panel discussion titled "EU-Azerbaijan Business Relations along the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor (Middle Corridor)" at the Azerbaijan–European Union Business Forum, APA reports.

He stated that coordinating transport processes, improving information exchange, and strengthening trust among participating parties are important for ensuring the sustainable operation of the Middle Corridor, increasing its efficiency, and attracting more cargo flows.

The Secretary General noted that multimodal transportation requires coordination and harmonization between different modes of transport. In this process, the timely transmission and receipt of information, as well as trust in that information, are of great importance.

According to him, delays of containers at borders, failure to load them onto ships on time, and a lack of information about cargo hinder the efficient use of the Middle Corridor's potential.

Jasurbek Choriev emphasized that, along with carriers, shippers, and port operators, government agencies, customs and border protection authorities, as well as phytosanitary services, must carefully fulfill their responsibilities in this process.

He stated that delays and other difficulties arising in transit transportation could cause cargo flows to be redirected to alternative routes.

The Secretary General added that although the security of the Middle Corridor is an important advantage, challenges related to the predictability of transportation remain. According to him, for shippers, not only the cost of transportation but also knowing precisely in advance how long it will take for cargo to reach its destination is important.

Jasurbek Choriev also spoke about the work being carried out in this direction within TRACECA. He noted that an agreement on a single transit permit has been adopted among six countries. This mechanism allows the use of a single permit in participating countries, the implementation of multimodal transportation, and eliminates the need to obtain separate additional permits for each country.
