Official event held at headquarters of the UN on occasion of Nowruz Holiday

The event took place at the initiative of Azerbaijan, on the basis of the resolution A/RES/64/253 of 2010, called International Nowruz Day accepted within the framework of the UN.

The event was held at the initiative of several countries that share this holiday â€“ Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey and Turkmenistan. Composition of participants covered diplomats of permanent representations of all member-states of the UN and members of Diasporas of the coauthor countries in the US.

President of the United Nations General Assembly Joseph Deiss delivered keynote speech at the event and then the address of the UN Secretary-General was read. Thereafter, culture minister of Tajikistan, permanent representatives of Albania, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey to the UN made speeches.

Permanent representative of Azerbaijan to UN, Ambassador Agshin Mehdiyev said that celebration of Nowruz Holiday at the international level was realized on the initiative of Azerbaijan, gave information on Nowruz traditions, its different natural, social and other harmonies. He noted that International Nowruz Day would contribute to intercultural and interreligious dialogue.

Permanent representatives of other coauthoring countries to UN delivered speeches too. They spoke about own practice connected with celebration of Nowruz holiday both at the national and international level.

After the official event, there was held official banquet for all participants.

As continuation of Nowruz celebration within framework of the UN, wide concert will be held on March 24 at UN, on March 26 at â€œTown Hallâ€ of New York by the participation of cultural workers from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkey.
