Large-scale restoration and reconstruction work currently being carried out in the Karabakh and East Zangezur regions within the framework of the implementation of the Great Return State Program to the liberated territories is being conducted based on environmental approaches, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Rashad Ismayilov said at an international event dedicated to World Environment Day (WED) hosted by Azerbaijan, APA reports.
The minister stated that Azerbaijan has received expert support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to support the ecological restoration process in the Karabakh and East Zangezur regions: “We express our gratitude to the organization for this support.”
It was noted that over the past 20 years, more than 100 parks and green zones have been established in the city of Baku alone, and large-scale projects have been implemented to preserve ecological balance and ensure that citizens live in a healthier environment.
“As achievements of recent years, we can point to the expansion of the network of protected areas by more than 10% across the country through the establishment of the Akhar-Bakhar and Ilisu National Parks, as well as the launch of efforts to create new national parks in Karabakh and East Zangezur. Non-governmental organizations have also made significant contributions to this process. Environmental initiatives, including projects implemented with the support of the IDEA Public Union and eco-volunteers for the protection of biodiversity and the reintroduction and restoration of endangered species to their historical habitats, have yielded important results. Today, we are solemnly celebrating Environment Day. The environmental challenges we face must remain in focus,” he said.
