“Energy transition and climate finance are among the key priorities of COP31,” COP31 Deputy Executive Director David Higgins said at the opening ceremony of the Fourth Climate Week (CW4) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, APA reports.

He expressed his gratitude to Azerbaijan and emphasized that cooperation with Azerbaijan and Türkiye is built on the principles of trust, mutual cooperation and friendship.

It was noted that this partnership creates a solid foundation for COP31.

Higgins emphasized that one of the main objectives of COP31 is to ensure the implementation of already adopted climate commitments and turn them into concrete benefits for people.

It was noted that greater attention will be paid particularly to the needs of populations and communities most exposed to the impacts of climate change.

In this context, it was highlighted that work is underway, in close cooperation with Türkiye, to build international consensus on priorities supporting the global energy transition.

It was noted that Pacific island states are among the regions facing the most serious challenges related to the impacts of climate change.

“Rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and threats to food and water security pose serious and vital risks to these countries. In this regard, the priorities of the Pacific region will have a special place on the COP31 agenda,” he added.
