Mobile data in Azerbaijanis' top travel destinations: what you need to know

27 October 2026 14:43 (UTC +04:00)

Türkiye, Russia, Georgia, Europe: key rules for mobile internet abroad

According to the State Statistical Committee, 1,384,500 Azerbaijani citizens travelled abroad in January–August 2026. Türkiye accounted for 43.9% of trips, Russia for 14.8% and Georgia for 12.8%. Ahead of the 8–9 November holidays and the New Year break, here is what travellers should know about mobile data in these destinations.

Türkiye

In the most visited country, travellers can use their operator's roaming package or a travel eSIM. It is easier to install the eSIM at home, before arrival. Depending on the plan, it connects to the Vodafone or Türk Telekom network. Options are listed on the LimitSim Türkiye eSIM page.

Russia

Since October 2025, foreign SIM cards and eSIMs in Russia get no mobile data or SMS for 24 hours after first connecting to a Russian network, while calls still work. The rule applies both to Azerbaijani numbers in roaming and to travel eSIMs, so maps, tickets and bookings are best saved on the phone in advance. Buyers of an eSIM for Russia should plan for this too.

Georgia

Trips to Georgia rose by 13.6% year on year. Travellers going by land can switch on the eSIM line in the phone's settings right after crossing the border. Depending on the plan, an eSIM for Georgia connects to Cellfie, Silknet or Magti.

Europe

This winter is the first season with the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) fully running at Schengen borders: since 10 April 2026, non-EU short-stay travellers have their fingerprints and facial image taken at the border. Those visiting several countries do not need a SIM card in each one; a single regional eSIM for Europe is enough.

Three checks before you go

- Check eSIM support: dial \*#06#. If a 32-digit EID appears, the phone is compatible. You can also look up your model in the list of eSIM phones.

- Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and do not delete it afterwards: some profiles cannot be downloaded again.

- Turn off data roaming on your main SIM to avoid unexpected charges. Your Azerbaijani number stays active.
