The death toll has risen to 15 after a Russian warplane crashed into a residential building due to engine failure, APA reports citing Associated Press.

Three people died Monday (local time) when they jumped from the top floors of a nine-story apartment building in a Russian city on the Sea of ​​Azov to escape a massive fire.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the Su-34 bomber crashed in the port city of Yeisk after one of its engines caught fire during takeoff on a training mission.

Both crew members got out safely, but the plane crashed into a residential area, causing a fire as tons of fuel exploded on impact, he said.

After hours of combing through the building’s charred debris, authorities said 14 residents, including three children, were found dead.

People jumped to their deaths from the upper floors of the building after the plane crashed into it. 

Another 19 people were taken to hospital with injuries, and one of them died of severe burns at a local hospital, bringing the death toll to 15, said Anna Minkova, the region’s deputy governor.

Authorities reserved emergency rooms at local hospitals and scrambled medical planes.

The Kremlin sent ministers to the accident site. 

Over 500 residents were evacuated and given temporary accommodation.

The Kremlin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been informed of the accident and sent the health and emergency ministers to the crash site along with the local governor.

The number of dead in a fire caused by a fighter jet crash in the courtyard of a residential building in the town of Yeysk in southern Russia has risen to 13 people, with the removal of debris at the spot completed, a source in the press service of the Emergencies Ministry told TASS, APA reports.

"Rescuers have completed clearing the debris. Ten bodies were found during rescue activities, which brings the total number of deaths to 13 people, including three children. Nineteen people were injured in the emergency situation," the ministry’s representative said.

Rescue efforts allowed saving 68 people, the source said, adding that over 360 were evacuated.

An Su-34 fighter-bomber crashed in Yeysk upon a climb during its training flight from a military airfield late on October 17 after one of its engines burst into flames. The fuel that spilled during the crash ignited, with the fire spreading to a nearby multi-story residential building, engulfing all nine stories. The pilots ejected. President Vladimir Putin ordered to provide all necessary aid to the victims of the emergency.
