Ukraine leaders announce officially its desire to join actions plan on NATO membership

Richard Lugar, head of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee who is in Kyiv said that appeal was addressed to the participants of the NATO summit to be held in Bucharest, the capital of Romania in April.
Lugar pointed out that the Ukrainian leader’s move would stir up discussions in society on the issue of Ukraine’s entry into the NATO, which may soon result in holding a referendum on this problem.
"Yushchenko asked U.S. president and other NATO members for supporting Ukraine’s efforts on joining the NATO membership action plan at the Bucharest summit," Lugar said.
Deputy Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Alexander Chaliy commenting on the issue said that Ukraine has fulfilled all terms of intensive dialogue stage with NATO and is ready to join actions plan for membership.
“We want consideration of this issue during NATO summit in Bucharest,” he said.
Chaliy said that intensive diplomatic consultations are being carried out in this direction at present and they face positive reactions. He did not want to forecast when Ukraine will accede to NATO. /APA/
