The US House of Representatives has passed legislation providing for tougher sanctions against Russia, APA reports.

The bill was approved on September 16 by a vote of 262-159. It had previously passed the Senate and now heads to US President Donald Trump for his signature.

The legislation provides for additional sanctions targeting Russia, including its energy sector, financial institutions, officials and the so-called “shadow fleet” used to transport Russian oil and circumvent existing restrictions.

The bill also grants the US president authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from countries that are among the largest purchasers of Russian oil and natural gas or facilitate the evasion of sanctions on Russian energy exports.

The legislation must be signed by President Trump to become law.
