Baku-APA. Amr Moussa, an Egyptian national and head of the Arab League, said Tuesday he will consider running for president of Egypt following longtime ruler Hosny Mubarak’s announcement that he will step down, APA reports quoting Earth Times.

Moussa told US broadcaster CNN that he will contemplate a run to succeed Mubarak, who said he will not seek re-election when his current term ends in September.

"I will think it (over) seriously in the next few weeks," Moussa said.

Mubarak had been under immense pressure to step down following a week of mass protests in Egypt calling for his resignation and an end to his 30-year authoritarian rule. Moussa said there should be an "intense debate" and that consensus needed to be built to determine Egypt’s political future.

Moussa served as Mubarak’s foreign minister for 10 years before taking over the Arab League in 2001.
