Baku. Farid Mirzayev – APA. ADA University hosted an event on ‘Climate change and global warming’ on Wednesday.

The event was attended by Azerbaijan's First Lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, MP Mehriban Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, head and founder of IDEA Public Union Leyla Aliyeva, rector of the National Aviation Academy Arif Pashayev, and a number of MPs.

Delivering a keynote speech at the event, Arif Pashayev, rector of ADA University, said the university is unrivaled in the region from an environmental point of view.

He added that ADA University is actively involved in tree planting campaigns.

Pashayev then informed the participants about important activities carried out by Leyla Aliyeva, head of IDEA Public Union, in the field of environmental protection.

Roald Sagdeev, a teacher of ADA University and National Aviation Academy, then delivered a lecture, noting that the Paris summit on global climate change succeeded.

“Some critics say the Paris summit does not ensure our protection from global warming, while other experts believe global climate change is fictitious. I have to say that global warming is causing some difficulties in the development of global civilization. For this reason, the volume of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere has to be reduced,” he said.

Sagdeev noted that some countries with vast industry have done a lot to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

“However, the volume of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere over the past 650,000 years has never been as high as it is now. Carbon dioxide emissions worldwide have doubled in a short period of time. I have to say Azerbaijan is not among the top 100 countries with the most polluted environment. That’s a positive case,” he added.

Addressing the event, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyn Baghirov noted that Azerbaijan aims to reduce oil and gas emissions by 2020. “Azerbaijan has increased planting activities in recent years. Tree planting campaigns are being carried out in Baku and Absheron peninsula,” he said.

The minister added that important projects in the field of ecology are being carried out in Azerbaijan with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and IDEA Public Union.

Baghirov stressed that Kur and Araz rivers are being polluted in Armenia and Georgia.

The minister mentioned that the construction of the Zoo continues.

Leyla Aliyeva, in her turn, expressed gratitude to the participants, noting that IDEA Public Union that she heads is doing very useful work for the country. “IDEA Public Union, which has operating for 5 years, has initiated a number of projects,” Aliyeva said.

Leyla Aliyeva stressed the importance of the protection of animals. “About 130,000 elephants were killed in Africa over the last three years. I’m very concerned about it,” she said.

Leyla Aliyeva added that every person should have a sense of environmental responsibility.
