A Finnish court has sentenced the Russian captain and an Azerbaijani crew member of the cargo ship Fitburg over the sabotage of undersea cables in the Baltic Sea, Euronews reports.

The ship's captain and the Azerbaijani national were accused of sabotaging two undersea cables linking Finland and Estonia.

According to the court's ruling, the captain was sentenced to three years and six months in prison, while the Azerbaijani national received a sentence of two years and 10 months. The court also ordered both individuals to jointly pay approximately €1.9 million in compensation.

It was noted that the 132-meter-long Fitburg had departed from St. Petersburg, Russia, on December 31, 2025, and was heading toward the Israeli port of Haifa when it was detained on suspicion that its anchor had damaged telecommunications cables in the Gulf of Finland. The ship had a total of 14 crew members, including nationals of Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan.

The ship's captain is reportedly planning to appeal the ruling.
