Malaria elimination project to be carried out in Azerbaijan

Baku. Ilhama Isabalayeva–APA. A new five-year project for elimination of malaria will be carried out in Azerbaijan beginning from October 2008 under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) and financed by the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

WHO Baku Office told APA disease treatment and preventive systems would be improved and material-technical basis of the laboratories would be strengthened within the project, which aims to establish mobile brigades and to conduct education work among the population as well.

WHO-prepared project will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will cover 2 and the second one - 3 years. About 7 million USD is demanded for the implementation of the project. Regions of the republic will be divided to three zones for taking measures within the project depending on the situation. The first measures will be taken in 31 most malaria-sensible regions.
