Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on the sidelines of the 20th Session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held in Baku, the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis told APA.
Welcoming the guest, Sahiba Gafarova recalled with satisfaction her previous meetings with Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. The Speaker noted the important role of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States and said that the conference provides a good opportunity for discussing both multilateral and bilateral relations. Confidence was expressed that the visit of the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament would contribute to the further development of interparliamentary ties.
During the conversation, satisfaction was expressed with the current level of relations between Azerbaijan and Iran. Sahiba Gafarova voiced confidence that relations would continue to develop in line with the ties between the two friendly neighboring countries. It was noted that various projects are currently being implemented between the two countries, new areas of cooperation are being considered, and all of this will further boost bilateral cooperation.
Recent developments in the region were also discussed. Sahiba Gafarova expressed hope that ongoing negotiations would contribute to reducing tensions and ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region. It was also noted that, on the instructions of President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan became the first country to send humanitarian aid to Iran during the recent events. The Speaker pointed out that President Ilham Aliyev visited the Iranian Embassy, signed the book of condolences, and was the only head of state to visit an Iranian embassy abroad.
The meeting highlighted the unique role of interparliamentary relations in bilateral ties and noted the mutual interest in further expanding parliamentary cooperation.
During the discussion, reference was also made to the telephone conversation between President Ilham Aliyev and President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian, as well as other contacts at various levels.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf highly appreciated President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Iran’s embassy in Azerbaijan to offer condolences following the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and many civilians, and thanked him for signing the book of condolences. He expressed gratitude for the steps taken by the Azerbaijani state and people during the war period and for the humanitarian assistance provided, stressing that these actions were highly valued by the Iranian people.
The Iranian parliament speaker said that his visit to Azerbaijan and participation in the event were also an expression of this gratitude. He thanked the President of Azerbaijan, the state, and the people for their support and assistance.
The guest noted that relations between Azerbaijan and Iran had seen significant progress over the past year, particularly highlighting the regular contacts between the presidents of the two countries.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also praised the successful organization of the 20th Session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States and wished Sahiba Gafarova success during Azerbaijan’s upcoming chairmanship of the organization. He emphasized the importance of relations among Muslim countries in the region.
The Iranian parliament speaker expressed satisfaction with the current level of relations between the legislative bodies and said that further expansion of ties would have a significant impact on the development of interparliamentary cooperation.
The sides also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.
