Azerbaijan to give first report to Council of Europe on European Social Charter

The two-day workshop is attended by representatives from Azerbaijani Economic Development, Health, Education Ministries, government and non-government organizations.
The principal objective of the event is to help Azerbaijani government agencies and NGOs, authorities, lawyers and civil society representatives prepare the first report on the European Social Charter (revised) ratified by the country on January 6, 2005.
Labor and Social Protection Deputy Minister Ilgar Rahimov said that Azerbaijan has ratified 55 conventions of the International Labor Organization.
He added that the member states have to annually report to the Council of Europe on their commitments in accordance with the European Social Charter (revised). Azerbaijan is going to submit its first report by October 31, 2007.
Mr. Regis Brillat, Executive Secretary of the European Social Charter, added that 36 of 46 member states have already submitted their reports. He noted that the workshop is deigned to render assistance to Azerbaijan in preparing the report. The workshop will also be held in Georgia and Armenia in July.
The European Social Charter is a document signed by the members of the Council of Europe in Turin, 18 October 1961 in which they agreed to secure to their populations the social rights specified there in order to improve their standard of living and their social well-being.
The Charter protects rights such as to work, to just conditions of work, to safe and healthy working conditions, to freedom of association, to social security, to benefit from social welfare services etc.
Member-states that have ratified the charter must submit reports every two years concerning the implementation of the articles of the Charter in their legal systems.
The European Social Charter was revised in Strasbourg, 3 May, 1996. /APA-Economics/
