The next attempt of the Armenian lobbyists has resulted in failure.
The failure took place in the Swiss Parliament this time.
What document was adopted in the Swiss Parliament?
On March 18, the proposal in the Swiss Parliament's Upper House, the Council of States (Senate), to organize an "International Forum on Peace in th Nagorno-Karabakh conflict" was adopted with 29 votes in favor, 12 against, and 4 abstentions. The proposal notes that a dialogue should be organized between the Azerbaijani government and the Armenians who voluntarily left Garabagh, for their return.
Although the Armenian lobby and the Armenian media tried to present the adoption of this proposal as an extraordinary event, what happened is actually nothing more than another fiasco.
The main reason for this is that such documents and proposals have no power for Azerbaijan or the international community and law. For many years, similar documents have been adopted in various European countries and international organizations. During the 30 years of occupation of Azerbaijani territories, numerous resolutions, decisions, proposals, calls, etc. were adopted. All of these proved to be nothing but ordinary pieces of paper. Even the four resolutions adopted by the UN remained on the table. Finally, Azerbaijan itself ensured the implementation of international law, justice, and the enforcement of UN resolutions, cleansing its lands from the occupiers.
Swiss MPs against the proposal
What happened in the Swiss Parliament is once again nothing more than the Armenian lobby's attempt to realize its financial interests.
This is well known to the MPs who participated in the discussions.
MP Josef Dittli, who opposed the proposal, stated that the peace forum could only take place if both countries, Azerbaijan and Armenia, agreed to it.
Another MP, Fabio Regazzi, emphasized that Garabagh is Azerbaijani territory, and that Switzerland should approach these matters with more caution and that such an initiative could cause dissatisfaction on both sides during the period when the peace treaty draft is being prepared. He added that Nagorno-Karabakh is not a subject of international law and that negotiations should be conducted between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The Swiss government is also against the proposal
The Swiss government has also opposed the proposal. In his statement, Ignazio Cassis, a member of the Federal Council of the Swiss Confederation and head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (minister), emphasized that any provocative actions are unacceptable while remaining committed to an objective and balanced resolution of the issue.
He noted that an initiative for peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia can only be carried out with the agreement of both countries. Ignazio Cassis reiterated Switzerland’s commitment to international law and a fair peace process, stressing that the initiative proposed in the Swiss Parliament is not supported by Azerbaijan and Armenia, and that unnecessary external interference should not be involved at a time when peace negotiations are underway between the two countries. The minister emphasized that Garabagh is Azerbaijani territory, and that a state like Switzerland cannot violate international law. Ignazio Cassis mentioned that this initiative by Parliament could harm the country's image, and stressed that the Federal government’s consideration of the proposal can only happen with the regard to both countries' positions on the matter.
The minister also stated that Switzerland recognizes Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and noted that this proposal could have negative consequences. He pointed out that this proposal would be unproductive, considering that the peace process is ongoing, the proposal is unacceptable and that Switzerland has helped facilitate contacts between two states.
The world accepts the new realities in the region established by Azerbaijan
As it seems, despite the efforts of various pro-Armenian circles and individuals, states and people based on international law and relations are taking a more constructive approach to the issue. The entire world now acknowledges the new realities that Azerbaijan has changed in the region. Since it is internationally recognized that Garabagh is part of Azerbaijan’s territory, there is nothing unusual about this. Since Azerbaijan does not interfere in the internal affairs of any country, it will not allow anyone to interfere in its internal affairs. The former Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has been permanently relegated to the trash heap of history.
