Baku. Ramiz Mikayiloghlu – APA. Azerbaijan falls victim to biased information spread abroad, said Peter Tase, expert on international relations at the Marquette University (US).

He made the remarks at the second panel session on the role of modern journalism in ensuring intercultural, inter-religious and inter-civilizational dialogue, organized by the Azerbaijan State News Agency – (AZERTAC) within the round table titled “Transforming of Journalism for the Information Age and its Role in Ensuring Inter-Civilizational Dialogue” during the fifth Baku International Humanitarian Forum in Baku Sept. 30.

Peter Tase, who acted as a moderator of the panel session, stressed the need to look for ways to achieve spread of transparent information about Azerbaijan abroad.

Addressing the round table, Aslan Aslanov, AZERTAC director general, noted that currently traditional journalism is subjected to a dynamic transformation.

“Internet network creates conditions for the dissemination of information about the technology of creation and production of weapons and drugs,” he said. “It is necessary to touch upon the role of networked journalism and microblogging. They are converted into civilian information agencies.”

In his speech, former Croatian President Ivo Josipović noted that war and peace are impossible without the media.

“Society should have a balance between responsibility and freedom. We must achieve high standards of journalism,” he said. “If media becomes a business, its mission will be wrong. Media should avoid monopoly and be independent. One of the important roles of the media is to promotion of multiculturalism. I think the conference serves this purpose.”

The former president said there is also a limit in the freedom of media. “For example, we should react against the promotion of genocide,” he added.

Tarana Mahmudova, assistant professor at the Baku State University, noted that internet made dialogue and discussions more interested. “Photos, videos are spread in minutes, moments via internet. We hope that journalism will meet all our expectations,” she added.

The 5th Baku International Humanitarian Forum kicked off at the Heydar Aliyev Center, Baku on Sep.29.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attended the official opening ceremony of the forum.

The Baku International Humanitarian Forum was initiated in 2010 by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and former Russian President, current Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev.
