A conference with the participation of high-ranking officials from the five Caspian littoral states will be held in Iran next month, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said, APA’s Tehran bureau reports.

He said that, with the consent of the littoral states, arrangements have been made to hold the conference in Tehran, and the meeting with the participation of high-ranking officials from the five littoral states is scheduled for September 23.

Gharibabadi stressed that the participation of the littoral states in Tehran could provide an opportunity to discuss issues of common interest, strengthen bilateral and multilateral relations, exchange views and lay the groundwork for more constructive interaction in the future.

The deputy minister recalled that 23 years ago on this very day, the five Caspian littoral states signed the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea, also known as the Tehran Convention, in Tehran, and 20 years have passed since the implementation of the document began.

The deputy foreign minister noted that recent developments in the region, particularly the 40-day war waged by Israel and the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran and its consequences, have once again brought the geopolitical and strategic importance of the Caspian Sea to the forefront.

He added that the security of the Caspian Sea is primarily a regional and internal responsibility and that this security should be ensured and safeguarded by the littoral states through mechanisms agreed upon by them.
