He made the remarks on the occasion of November 23 - International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI).
According to Alasgarli, international organizations are working on developing a list of the journalists who have been killed in the line of duty since 1990. “Though the list is not fully ready, according to the initial estimates, it includes over 2,500 journalists,” he said.
The TUJ chairman mentioned that the list covering the period after 2005 and devoted to the killed journalists whose murderers still go unpunished, includes Elmar Huseynov, the editor of the magazine “Monitor”, and publicist writer Rafig Tagi.
Alasgarli went on to add that Azerbaijani law-enforcement agencies said it is impossible to detain and punish the murderers of Elmar Huseynov and Rafig Tagi as they are hiding abroad.
The TUJ chairman further expressed confidence that over the past years Azerbaijani law-enforcement bodies followed the issue and spared no efforts for finding and punishing the criminals.
In IFEX Strategy conference in Beirut in 2011, the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) declared November 23 as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. It comes ahead of 23 November which commemorates the 2009 Maguindanao massacre in the Philippines when at least 32 journalists lost their lives in the single deadliest attack on media.
