According to PEC, four journalists were killed in Gaza Strip, two – in Russia, two – in Venezuela, three – in Pakistan, one – in Somali, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Alwan Radio broadcaster Alaa Hammad Murtaja, journalist Omar Silawi, Basel Ibrahim Faraj, who worked as an assistant cameraman for the Algerian TV network ENTV and the Palestine Media and Communications Company, Palestinian Public TV cameraman Ihab al-Wahidi died as a result of air strikes by the Isreali warplanes on Gaza strip.

On January 8, unknown people murdered the editor-in-chief of the pro-opposition newspaper “The Sunday Leader” Lasantha Wickramatunga in Sri Lanka.

Venezuelan reporters Jacinto Lopez and Orel Zambrano were also killed in unknown conditions.

Pakistani journalists Mohammad Imran and Tahir Awan were killed in a suicide terrorist attack in northern Pakistan. Reporter Amir Vakil was killed in Rawalpindi.

Unknown people killed Nepalese journalist Uma Singh. Radio presenter Hassan Mayow Hassan was killed in Somalia.

Reporter of the Russian RIA 51 news agency Shafig Anrahov was killed on January 5 in Murmansk, Russia. Journalist Anastasia Baburova, who was wounded in an assassination attempt against lawyer Satnislav Markelov, died in Moscow hospital on January 19.

PEC said 91 journalists were killed in 2008.
