The timing of the next meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump has not yet been discussed, although both leaders plan to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in China, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said, APA reports citing Russian media.
According to Ushakov, Putin and Trump discussed the development of major economic initiatives during their telephone conversation, including supplies of Russian petroleum products to US and global markets.
He said Trump postponed some scheduled engagements to speak with Putin. The US President congratulated his Russian counterpart on his recent birthday and conveyed greetings from his wife, Melania Trump.
Ushakov said Putin emphasized the importance of resolving the Iran issue through diplomacy, noting that diplomatic options had not yet been exhausted.
The presidential aide also said Putin claimed that Ukraine’s attempts to halt the Russian military’s advance were futile.
According to Ushakov, Putin maintained that talks with Ukraine could not currently resume because of what he described as Kyiv’s attempts to disrupt elections to Russia’s State Duma.
Ushakov added that Trump instructed US officials to convey the Russian side’s messages to the Ukrainian delegation.
