Azerbaijan Press Council’s Commission for Complaints consider five appeals
The complaint of Baku Main Police Office about the article “Etologiya dorojnoy politsii†(Ethology of traffic police) published in Ekho newspaper was considered. Representative of the newspaper said the article was published in the column “Tochka zreniya†(pointy of view) and was the position of the author, not of the newspaper. But he was told that there were concrete items about the responsibility of the head of media outlet in the law on “Mass media†and other legal acts on media. The commission came to the conclusion that the newspaper violated “Rules of Professional Behavior of Azerbaijani Journalists†and recommended the Ekho newspaper to publish a letter reflecting its position and apologize.
The complaint of Baku Main Police Office about the article “Cooperation of police with prostitutes†published in Tezadlar newspaper on August 5-12, 2008 was considered at the meeting. It was noted that the article disrespected a number of ethic norms. The investigation was not carried out thoroughly, the article contained false views about Baku police and “Rules of Professional Behavior of Azerbaijani Journalists†were violated.
The commission also discussed the complaint of Institute for Freedom and Security of Reporters about the articles published in two newspapers. It was noted that “Rules of Professional Behavior of Azerbaijani Journalists†were violated both in the article published in Hurriyyet (Emin Huseynov really beaten?) and article published in Gundalik Baku (Emin Huseynli in the role of the next ‘victim’).
The commission came to the conclusion that “Rules of Professional Behavior of Azerbaijani Journalists†were violated in the articles published in Azadlig newspaper “Oligarchs capture YAP†(July 22, 2008) and “Money conflict in YAP†(July 25, 2008).
